We finish off our journey by visiting the heavenly islands of the Penghu archilipego in south-west Tawain.
The islands of Penghu are an archipelago of 90 islands and islets. The four main and largest islands are Baisha, Xiyu, Huxi and Magong.
Mr. and Mrs. Chen welcome us in Nan Liao, a small village located on the island of Huxi. President of the local association, Mr. Chen ensures that the local community is involved and benefits from the tourism development in their village.
The first activity proposed is Cowpat Through: Cow manure is collected and reserved, before being modelled into small patties that are dried and then used as a biofuel for cooking! Eco-village you said? Next comes the traditional labouring of the sweet potato field with the help of a buffalo, the visit of ancient heritage houses and coral walls, topped by a demonstration of the traditional cooking methods for fish. Guests are encouraged to participate in all of these activities! The community is truly committed to developing a tourism product that focuses on the natural and cultural heritage of Penghu.
Our next four days are amazing. The exploration of the region is fascinating, with so many different landscapes and beaches to dawn upon. White sand beaches, coral beaches, impressive geological formations, crystal clear water….you name it! Like everywhere else in Taiwan, the locals seem more than happy to show us around and let us discover their islands and culture.
We also visit an ocean based fish (and oyster) farm, enjoy a boat trip to the Mudou islands including an epic fishing session, adventure on a tour of the inter-tidal zone on the lookout for tasty ocean treats, bike ride along the coast, swim on deserted beaches…the island of Penghu is full of secrets places to discover.
Mr. Feng, met 10 months ago in South Korea, is to thank for the possibility of this trip. He invites us for a memorable firework evening, one of the many nights organized by the Penghu Fireworks Festival. We part with tears…
Visiting Penghu is also the occasion to spark your taste buds. The local seafood dishes are exquisite: sea urchin omelette, fresh oysters, squid vermicelli, prawns, muscles, crab…you name it! To satisfy your sweet tooth, don’t miss out on the cactus ice-cream, its delicious!
Don’t miss a visit to Nan Liao and the Penghu Islands during your stay in Tawain!
