Our recent collaboration with the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office and the Ministry of Tourism Luang Prabang has given us the opportunity to discover different types of accommodations located in this charming town designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
Our most recent discovery? Luang Prabang View, a luxury hotel made up of 74 rooms. Nestled on top of a hill, it offers sensational views of the city, and a breath-taking sunset.
The website reveals only little about the wonderful responsible practices initiated in this hotel. John, the General Manager, a Welsh expatriated for more than 2 years in Laos and more than 30 years in Pacific Asia, guides us through a green tour of the property.
We are enchanted by the hotel’s numerous responsible practices. The restaurant’s food wastes are FULLY composted by 4 resident pigs. A duck farm accompanies this charming farmyard, providing an abundance of eggs for the restaurant and staff.
The organic garden is just as impressive: salads, tomatoes, aubergines, green beens, carrots, all kinds of herbs, mangoes, coconuts, bananas, avocados, mangosteens, dragon fruit…We even notice a garden dedicated to the culture of aloe vera!
These fresh products are used in the restaurant to enhance the culinary experience of each guest. What is left is sold to the local market and employees, an additional revenue for the hotel!
The waste water is treated depending on its source. Black water from the kitchens is decontaminated by a home-made enzyme (EM1) composed mainly of a mixture of molasses and composted citrus fruit. The grey water is transferred to a small pond where fish and specialized plants will take care of the purification. The clean water is then recycled and reused in the gardens, brilliant!
John proves extremely modest. He values action rather than communication of good practices: “Why promote these actions? They should be considered normal!” he explains full of determination.
The application of all these practices demands for strong staff coopération. With 124 employees total, the trainings realized by John are exceptional.
A great example of success and return on investment in terms of revenus, guest experience, and benefits for the local community. John reveals that some of his staff have already started reproducing the system at home.
Luang Prabang View, a role model for the luxury tourism industry!
