The Fulong region, located in the northeast of Tawain, is well known for its surf spots, cycling and hiking routes, numerous historical sites, and its undulating wave-cut coastal platform landscapes. The most-popular Old Caoling Tunnel is an ancient railway tunnel which has now been transformed into a 2,167 meter bike path.
Fulong’s official tourism team guided us on a tour of the 20 km Old Caoling Loop Line Cycle Route along the Northeast Coast of Taiwan. We hopped on our bikes and set off on a journey to discover the many beautiful sites along the route, the marine terraces, historical monuments, lighthouses, the infamous Old Caoling Tunnel, Maoao fishing village, and Dongxin Temple. A great way to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze!
The region is also famous for its Caoling Historical Trail: 8.5 km of hiking paths, alongside numerous temples, shrines and historical artifacts, through sumptuous valleys and broad-levered forests. The 100-year-old trail dates back to the Qing Dynasty and served as the main road between Taipei and Milan for previous generations. Travellers can enjoy the natural beauty of the area while cherishing the stories of Taiwan’s ancient pioneers.
This historic transportation route is now home to a lively sand sculpture art festival and the ho-hai-yan Rock festival, bringing culture and nature together as one. We were lucky enough to witness the preparations for the sand sculpture festival. The sculptures, each of them more impressive than the other, are the work of foreign and local artists.
The destination is also popular for its water sports: surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, snorkelling, stand-up paddling, all exciting ways to explore the natural landscape!
You can also visit the various old fishing villages, where abalones, lobsters and agar seaweed are numerous. Some of the villagers still practice traditional fishing methods.
Be sure to try the refreshing sweet seaweed jelly. With many flavours to chose from, its delicious!
Don’t miss the visitor’s centre that provides a full understanding of the local ecology and culture.
Dollar, our local host from the Being Outdoors B&B, reveals another secret from the region: surfing. An active member of the local community, Dollar organizes regular beach clean-ups, and encourages taking a more responsible approach to the environment in order to live a healthier life. A pleasant encounter, and delicious breakfast waffles, we definitely recommend the hotel!
Don’t leave the area without tasting some of the exquisite seafood dishes: abalones, lobsters, seaweed soup, sashimi… A big thank you to Fulong’s official tourism team for such a great welcome; the Taiwanese definitely have a great sense of hospitality.
The Old Coaling Tunnel was a finalist for the 2015 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards and was included in 2016 in the Global Top 100 Green Destinations. Fans of explorations of all kinds, Fulong is your next priority destination!
